Keeping Your Sex Toys Clean

It goes without saying that if you have sex toys that keeping them clean is an absolute must.  It is more than your sexual health that you need to be concerned with, your overall health can be impacted from unclean toys.  You also need to be concerned about what your toys are made of, it will determine how you clean them and how you should be using them.  For the most part toys are made from things like rubber, vinyl, silicone, stainless steel, glass and Cyberskin.  Now let’s take a look at how you should be cleaning your toys.

Toy Cleaning Basics

For most sex toys you can clean with some mild soap and warm water, exercise caution and don’t dunk anything with batteries into water.  Not all vibrators are water proof so be careful you don’t get the electronics wet.  Anything made of nylon, like harnesses or other bondage gear can usually just go in the wash with regular clothes.

Some sex toys, particularly those made of glass, stainless steel or silicone can handle heat and are easily disinfected.  You can either run them through the dishwasher as long as they don’t have any batteries or electrical components.  If you don’t have a dishwasher you can sanitize them by immersing them in boiling water and a tiny bit of bleach.

What is it Made From

If you really aren’t sure exactly what your toys are made of then err on the side of caution and just wash them in warm water and let it air dry.  Even if your toys are considered waterproof that doesn’t mean they can handle being thrown in the dishwasher or boiling water with bleach.  When shopping for new toys, especially penetrative toys then silicone is usually your best option.  Silicone is easy to keep clean and you can disinfect your toys with no problem, it is also hypoallergenic.

Some toys like dildos made from rubber, jelly or latex are porous and that means they are harder to clean and disinfecting them in the dishwasher is a big no-no.  You can use condoms on your dildos it will help keep them clean and free of bacteria.  It can also extend the life of your toys. Keep in mind that you should never use oil based lubricants on either your toys or condoms, water based lubricants are better and safer.  Keeping your toys safe and clean keeps protects you and your partner.
